Getting old, aren’t I?
Friday, June 19th, 2009In light of the fact that I just graduated college, I’m beginning to realize just how young most amateur webmasters and bloggers are. I think I really only know of three, besides myself, that are over the age of 20: Mija, Hideko, Veve. And of these, Mija and Veve are professional graphic designers. I wonder, sometimes, whether I’m beginning to outgrow the community. Most of the people that I used to call my internet friends have vanished from the web altogether, and I wonder if maybe I’ll be joining them in the years to come.
I’ll be starting medical school in the fall, which is notoriously time-consuming. Will I be able to find the time to continue maintaining my websites? Will I be able to contend with all those up-and-coming 13-year-olds? I wonder if, by the time I start residency, I’ll still have the energy to keep updating.

Aw, you can do it! I probably won’t go to medical school since I’m going to be a psychologist instead of a psychiatrist. It just doesn’t sound fun, medical school. :(
I’ve also wondered what will happen to my blog when I get older. I’m only 16, so I won’t have to worry about that for a while, though. I believe in yoooou.

I think that maintaining a graphics website may be hard as you get older and busier, but blogging doesn’t have to be daily. And you can always merge your blog with your other sites- which means it is just a part of your blog and doesn’t have to be updated too frequently. Maybe it is more about how much you want to do these things as you get older. I also wonder at what point I’ll get sick of blogging and such, but there is no point worrying over it :D

its truly hard to maintain a graphics site/comm and work and deal with life lol especially at our age! All the new sites that pop up are from 13-17 age areas and I am really starting to feel out of the loop. I totally understand what you mean. I thought about giving up on my site while I was in school – I totally didn’t want to open photoshop after a 12 hour design day but after awhile it relaxed me to just design fun graphics from time to time instead of school work or freelance. BUT at the moment I haven’t had time to do anything O-o its taking me forever to even find time to update MM with the new layout!! *rambles rambles*

There will always be time to do web design, just maybe not when your in the mood to do it -.-
No one can “compete” with a bratty teen when it comes to internet escapades, then again I fail to see how it is a competition.
As it stands your layouts are 100x better than they were even two years ago, I fail to see why this trend wont continue, so long as you remain interested…

Lol, I feel old! I went through the same thing when I started university. I don’t know if it was because of my dying interest (in animanga), or the fact that the peers of my generation were outgrowing it as well that pushed me out of the circle. But it wasn’t a time issue; I find that if I’m really interested in something, I’d make it happen.
Now, although I’m still interested in design, my focus is shifting towards a more mature audience, and that dictates a different approach, which like Mija, I’m too lazy to execute after a day of work. If you’re still passionate about it, I have no doubt you’ll find some time for it. It might be a breather away from the science. As far as contending with teenagers… your experience really does show through in your craft.
Finally, have fun in medical school!

@Veve: My problem is actually that, when I start designing, I get so into it that I lose track of time. I have no discipline when it comes to design, so the only way that I can make sure I get everything done is by banning myself from Photoshop while I have more important things to attend to. I do hope that I’ll manage to work it into my schedule somehow, though.
